I always wish that I had more time to put into these. There meant to be more like a warm up or something to do to unwind so I don't want to spend to much time on them.
So I really like how this one came out. For a four hour copy I'm really pleased. I never really expect to be able to completely duplicate a painting but this one came fairly close.

Another fifty/fifty split and I think that works. I'm on issue 3 at this point.
A copy of a painting of a plateau by Noah Bradly. This is two hours into a four hour copy.

Friday, March 29, 2013

A nice mix here, half and half. On issue 3 here I think or maybe the end of issue 2. I'm to tiered to check up on that right now.
Finished four hour rain forest. This one was difficult because of all the things going on here. Sooooo many plants. Overall not bad but not great, I think that I can do better.

Thursday, March 28, 2013

While I'm getting away from all heads but I hit a good patch of exposition so there's more heads than I would have liked.
Two hours into a rain forest painting, I think that it's coming along pretty good but all the foliage is giving me some trouble.

I feel a little meh about how this one came out. I got a lot of the main things the way I wanted them but there just wasn't enough time to get everything the way I wanted. I think that it was a case of trying to do to much in a to short a period of time.
Here is a decent mix of body and faces split 6 and 6. I think that in the future I might just focus on the body. Mike Turner had a lot of great artistic talent but his faces seemed to only have a couple of emotions and that's not something I want to happen to me.

More of issue 2 and still a lot of exposition so more faces. But I think that they came out pretty good.

A start of a four hour copy, two hours in. The light was really good in the original so I decided to copy it and learn something from it.

Monday, March 25, 2013

Staring on copying issue 2 now and I went back to faces because the issue is very exposition heavy. When they where writing the dialogue for this issue they got a little carried away, none of it is bad I think that they just got a little carried away.
Every once and a while I do a painting and some concept or idea that I've been struggling with just clicks and this happened while I was working on this painting. The painting itself is good, not great but good, but I was playing with color and had a epiphany about how the color and light would look on the rocks. Before this I would have painted them blue because that's what they look like in the original photo but here I painted them a pale purple and placed them next to the saturated orange. This gave the appearance of blue but looked believable in a way that just painting strait up blue wouldn't have.

So I think that this will be the last time I do the color study. I kind of want to focus on the figure and faces and worry about the color in paintings. This will also get me through the comic faster meaning that I can move onto other artists sooner.
Two hours into a painting of the canyons in Petra. In the canyon buildings are carved into the stone and its amazing. I visited them once while I was in the Coast Guard and it is a remarkable place, one of those things that make you feel very small and humble.

Saturday, March 23, 2013

A few more full bodies in this one and I like that. One of the problems with copying Mike Turner is some of the super heavy cross hatching he uses that makes it kind time consuming to copy.
Four hours and it's finished. While not even close to the quality of the original I think that I learned a lot from doing this copy.

Friday, March 22, 2013

Oi still with the faces. I think part of it is that I get the figure in lightly and then start tightening up the whole thing only to run out of time having just finished the face.
Now a copy. This is a copy of a painting called Canyon Secrets by the artist James Wolf. this is about two hours in and I like where it headed even it has a long way to go.

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Still too many faces but overall not bad.
Pretty rough but I like the way it turned out. Four hours well spent.

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

All faces this time and even though I liked doing them I think that I'm going to steer clear of doing another one all faces. I think that my main focus should be on the whole figure.

Okay so I'm starting on a bunch on landscape studies and this is the first one. This is about two hours in and while it's a little rough I like the progress.

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

So to try and make this a little more interesting I decided to practice identifying colors on the longer drawings.
Zorn copy finished. I think that this one came out pretty good, I liked that subject was older that made the painting a bit more challenging but I like it.

Monday, March 18, 2013

So for a long time I struggled with legs and getting them in the right proportion, they kept coming out to long for some reason and now I know the reason. Mike Turner draws his legs longer than normal, he makes it work but I can't seem to.
So this is going to be my final portrait for a while after this Zorn copy is done I will be moving onto doing landscapes. This is two hours into the portrait.
So my work schedule changed this week meaning that I forgot to make a post yesterday. I broke my good momentum. Oh well to make up for it TWO post today. More Mike Turner stuff to start with. These are kind of fun to do I get to analyze the way he does figures and see what I like and don't like about his style.
Amanda Palmer finished. Three hours in and I like it a lot. By no stretch of the imagination is this perfect but is was fun and educational and sometimes that's enough.

Saturday, March 16, 2013

So over the next couple of I'm going to be doing some quick Michael Turner figure copies because I really like some aspects of his style and Fathom, even though it's not the best comic ever, was one of the first non-super hero comics I read. Here I did six five minute copies and a half hour color copy, but my attention felt a little divided while I was doing the color copy so I'm not sure I'll keep doing that.
Amanda Fucking Palmer! She is one of my favorite singer/songwriters so after I watched her TED talk I decided to paint her. and here she is after two hours. A lot to do but a good start.

Friday, March 15, 2013

Yay Hooray the last foot. Now I'll be focusing on a couple different anatomy book copies and trying to get those done.
This came out pretty good. There's not much I can say about it negatively that wouldn't come across as nit picky and neurotic.

Thursday, March 14, 2013

One more day of feet whoooooooo!
Two hours into a three hour Liepke copy. I couldn't find the tittle of this one but I like it.

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Another foot. Only two more to go.
My finished three hour portrait of Kat Dennings. I think that it turned out okay there are some flaws, the biggest flaw I see is the chin that is a bit big.

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Foreshortening and feet my two greatest foes. In spite of that I think that this turned out pretty good.
Kat Dennings from 2 Broke Girls and Thor. This is two hours into a three hour portrait.

Monday, March 11, 2013

Five more to go and as you might guess I'm looking forward to being done with feet for a while. It was entertaining and educational but I'm ready to move on to other problem areas.

Egyptian Woman finished. I like the way that this came out, there is a lot of subtle color variation in her face and I think that it looks good.

Sunday, March 10, 2013

I only have six more feet to go on this whole thing.
Two hours into a John Singer Sargent copy. This one is just called Egyptian Woman and so far so good.

Saturday, March 9, 2013

The bottom of a foot. Came out pretty good.

Emma Watson finished. For the most part I like the way that this one came out. there are some spots that could have used a bit of work but over all not bad.

Friday, March 8, 2013

A foot grabbing a hacky sack. That was kind of fun for me to draw because I pick up stuff with my feet all the time.
Emma Watson with short hair. Some people don't like the she cut her hair off but I think she looks really cute with the short hair, but I could be biased because I like women with short hair. One hour left on this portrait.

Thursday, March 7, 2013

I wish that I was funnier or a better writer just so I could come up with some kind of witty foot related puns to accompany these pictures. Because right now all I can think to type is, look at the foot.
A finished Zorn copy of Gustav. I have some issues with how the hair came out particularly the mustache, it looks a bit to much like a plastic fake mustache. Other than that not much else to say.
