A shot from Avatar. I really like the lighting in this scene and I think that overall this turned out really good. This is the first study that's two hours long and that seems to be the right amount of time to get the feeling of the scene down. My goal with these isn't so much specific things like textures or detail but things like composition, lighting and color. While there are some minor issues with this one I like it.
Finishing the Hogarth studies. This is the 20th page and I have a lot of action and movement shots.

Quorra from the Tron Legacy movie. After this one I spend two hours on these paintings so that I can really create something of quality and learn about the various things that I'm trying to learn
Last of the Fathom pages.

From Lord of the Rings. I've always had trouble with creating the illusion of depth and I think while this isn't perfect I do think that I learned more about creating depth in a painting. And really that's the whole point of doing all these studies to find my problem areas and then address them.
Okay done with the sketch book stuff and I'll be finishing the Hogarth stuff in a few days but this has been in my queue for a while. It's copies from the comic Fathom and I have this one and one more. Doing these copies was valuable and in the future I'll do more like this.

A quick shot from the Sherlock Holmes movie. This one came out waaaaay to rough for my liking. The colors look alright but the blending is poor.
My character from my comic idea. I think that she looks a little too awkward here. I think part of it is that I have trouble drawing gestures.

A shot from the Matrix. This one didn't get as far as I would have liked but I did get the colors and the composition down. At this point I started to think about doing these for two hours instead of one and a half.
Gay pride in Seattle is interesting. There are lots of very attractive people wearing very little. I decided to draw a few, sadly I was working so these are done from memory.

A scene from Underworld. This is one of my favorite movies to do boring housework to, there's lots of shooting and fighting and there's enough of a plot to just hold the movie together. This is one of the quiet parts where Selene and Mike are talking and I think that this came out good except for one thing. I think I should have made the whole color scheme cooler.
A character I did on my break. The rat thing below her is the kind of thing that happens when not enough sleep meets too much coffee.

I don't draw many dragons or fantasy creatures so I thought I would try to do that some more. This is a shot from the fourth Harry Potter movie. My main focus on this was the anatomy of the dragon, I was less concerned with color or composition.
Wormwood gentleman corpse on the top left and a demon knight all just for fun.

So I finally decided to do some hour and a half studies from movies. After these first few I just go up to two hours. This one is from the Tempest based on the Shakespeare play with the wizard being female instead of male as is done normally. This shot of her talking with someone was neat because of the lighting so I did my best to get the features and the lights correct. In some parts the lights where a bit more of a warm green but overall not bad.
At the top here a girl on my bus below her Korra from The Legend of Korra cartoon that is AMAZING (I cant wait until book 2). At the bottom is some stuff inspired by Civ 5 when I was playing as the Persians. And just if any one was curious I defeated the Arabs by land, Siam by sea and Egypt by nuclear missile.

So I wasn't sure what to paint for the next couple of weeks so while I figured it out I painted a swallow. I took a little over an hour to paint.
Pin-up in the top corner and then a snake and some kind of snake man. I also got a sword in there just because.

A quick portrait of Kate Micucci from the band Garfunkel and Oats. I've been listening to there albums and some of her solo stuff. Garfunkel and Oats are hilarious and her solo stuff is folksy, cute and catchy. This took a little over an hour and I like how it came out for such a quick painting.
More Discworld stuff. It's a REALLY quick sketch of a comic idea I had while listening to one of the Discworld books. One of the running gags in the books is that criminals will take her hostage because she's a woman without realizing that she is also a werewolf. And then hilarity ensues as the criminals negotiate to get away from her.

My last painting in SAI for awhile. Its Maya from Borderlands 2. Drawing in SAI is awesome I like the way lines come out and the program has a nice feature to stabilize pen strokes, witch helps me out a lot because my tablet gets a lot of use and has a few weird spots where the pen gets wobbly. Painting in it is tough for me because I don't know how the layer styles affect the colors. In Photoshop I don't even have to think about what a layer is going to do I just know, in SAI its different enough to just drive me mad. So its back to Photoshop for my painting, for now I'll keep drawing in SAI for a while.
DISCWORLD STUFF! I am a huge fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series of books and here are some sketches of the main characters in the book Unseen Academicals. Starting from the top left and going clockwise, Patrician Lord Vetinari, Mr. Nutt, Juliet, Lady Margolotta, Glenda, and Trev. On the side I have Juliet in a bikini as she is the Discs fist super model and Glenda in what I imagine her work uniform to be. I tried to make Glenda look attractive in a more eveyday person sort of way even though the book tries to make her sound fat and homely, I did that because people in the book always see her with Juliet so they where describing her in comparison to Juliet rather than describing her actual attributes.

The colors came out funny and the blending is really fuzzy. So I think I'm done with using SAI for painting, I don't like how it handles. Drawing is nice and I think I'll do more drawing in the program but not any more painting.
Some more buildings and some sitting poses and a little face that I think is Axton from Borderlands 2.

Getting a bit better. Still taking me a long time to get this down. I'm not sure I like SAI for painting.
Some Pin-up style poses. The top left and bottom are the best in my opinion.

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Blending is still giving me a lot of trouble. I can get stuff blending okay but the colors look weird and I couldn't get them right.
More building stuff for no apparent reason. And some stuff that looks like was out of Young Frankenstein.

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

So I decided to try a new program called SAI. I like drawing in the program but painting is a bit tricky. This came out good for the first try at a new program but the blending was tough to get a handle on.
So I really like Borderlands so I drew Madd Moxxi. I also drew a mermaid and some buildings.

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

I tried to do some foreshortening on this pose. I think that it came out good even though the face is really unfinished.
Like most of my sketch book pages a lot of random stuff. A pin-up pose in the corner, Batman from Batman Beyond in the corner and at the bottom a punk rock chick.

Monday, July 15, 2013

So I spent more than an hour on this because the photo was so nice and looked like a painting that I had to give it some extra attention. So besides that fact that large parts are unfinished I like the way this looks and was coming along. I just need to get faster.
More Tron stuff. I really liked the movies and the cartoon despite the fact that not many people seemed to. These are two more characters from the cartoon, Paige (the woman) and Beck (the guy). They have an interesting relationship that's both antagonistic and romantic and I think that the writers pulled it off well.

Sunday, July 14, 2013

The face here is kind of nice but the rest of the body is kind of meh. The drawing is nice but the painting isn't very good.
Tried to do some Spider-Man type of poses at the top. Below that I have a drawing of Electro from the Ultimate Spider-Man comics and next to him Mara from the Tron Uprising cartoon that is really good but sadly cancelled. Damn you Disney.

Saturday, July 13, 2013

I really like the way this one came out, my blending is coming out much better and hopefully will continue to improve.
Some Spider-man themed drawing. Black Cat at the top and the side a quick Spidey along with one of Doc Oc's tentacles.

Friday, July 12, 2013

Some interesting shadows and lights going on here and overall I like the way this one came out.
Maya from Boarderlands 2. A friend gifted me a copy of the game and I've been playing a lot of it in the last month or so. I have a couple characters going at the moment ,Maya and Axton.

Thursday, July 11, 2013

Not real happy with this one. The lighting and the colors came out off and while the anatomy is good the definition in the painting is crap. Oh well not every one can be a winner.
The protagonist and antagonist for a story I working on. Still trying to get a handle on these characters and I think that I'm getting closer. Also a person falling or flying on the bottom of the page.

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

I decided to practice some foreshortening and that part of the painting came out came out pretty good. Some of the colors came out kind of off and I'm not really happy with the blending.
A futuristic train of some sort at the top and some monsters below. I don't draw a lot of creatures so I decided to give it a try. I think I need some work on my creatures.

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

The lighting was a bit weird in this photo so the model has the completion of a corpse. It's still really rough around the arms and face and the blending is not very good. This isn't one of my better paintings.
Some quick little heads, Superman in armor, a secret agent type woman with a gun and a woman sticking out her tongue at you. So it's just a bunch of random stuff which happens when you draw on you way to work every day.

Monday, July 8, 2013

I tried to push the colors a little bit and I think that it came out pretty good. I think that some of the blending is a little weak but other than that I like it.
Some bus stop sketches combined with some drawings from my imagination.

Portrait

A quick portrait the came out a little splotchy but other wise okay.
So the Hogarth pages take a long time to do and I can't produce one every day and since I had all these sketch book pages I decided to post a bunch of these while I finish the Hogarth Copies. Here I have a house and street lamp for a subterranean race of lizards. next to that is a sketch that was going to be Power Girl but I didn't get the costume finished and below that is a hunter character that I designed for fun. There's also some random heads floating around.
