 Gestures and David Finch tutorial.
Page 5. I feel like the whole process is becoming easier now. Doing the pencils on paper and then inking in Photoshop is working really well for me.

Gestures and the David Finch tutorial.
Page 4 of my comic.

Saturday, January 25, 2014

I've decided to do ten one minute drawings and then five three minute drawings. Also David Finch copies.
Okay got this inked and it took a lot longer that I would have liked. I need to find a way to do this faster. And from left to right the characters are.
Mary - An android and the captains secretary
Lorin - A part of a sun-species of humans designed to live in the desert. Was raised to be an assassin.
Alma - Part of the alien species known as yulk. He was Lorins handler and now more of a surrogate father.
Elrick - The captain
Lockholm - Elricks first mate. A gentle giant type and the moral compass for Elrik.
Ch'al - The diminutive cook. His species eats insects so the crew eats a lot of bugs.
Holka - The medic. We don't have much characterization yet but I've pictured her as being a cool big sister type.

 Gestures and mouths and ears.
Page five rough pencils.

Gestures and tutorial stuff. I've moved onto doing gestures from the movie Tangled.
The cast for the comic that I'm working on. I'll get into character descriptions when I get it inked.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Just the gestures and tutorial stuff today. I have page five and a character sheet for my comic about half done so they may get posted tomorrow.

Gestures and the start of the Head tutorial by David Finch. I think that in the picture below you can see how much he has influenced my drawing.
Pencils for the fourth page. For this page I decided to draw the whole thing out on paper and then scan it in to see if I got a better final product. It has taken a little bit of reworking to my process but I think that this page (that's mostly inked now) is a definite improvement in quality. The speed will come later.

The last of the David Finch body tutorial. Next is heads.
Page three of the comic I'm working on.

Gestures and David Finch tutorial. I have one more figure to do for this tutorial and then it's onto his DVD about heads. This is the sixth or seventh time that I've gone trough his tutorials, they have been so helpful the way he explains stuff makes so much sense to me. And while I'm not as good as him yet I think that his influence on my art can be clearly seen in my line work.
Page two finished. Well mostly. We have a colorist now so these are going to be colored. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she does with the colors. Also I've noticed something strange that the longer I work on a page the less sense it make to me as a whole page. I think it's because I work on the individual panels for so long that they each become a separate image. Like how a movie wouldn't make sense if you only looked at one frame for a long time and them moved forward sixty frames, then back a hundred and so on.

I could also not be getting enough sleep.

 Gestures and David Finch tutorial.
Sketchbook stuff. Thumbnails for page six and some sketches for various thing from the comic.

    Gestures and David Finch tutorial.
Sketchbook stuff. Thumbnails for my comic and some boat studies. Also the main character yelling but he looks like he's yawning.

   Gestures and David Finch tutorial.
More pages and some doodles for my comic.

Sunday, January 12, 2014

  Gestures and David Finch tutorial.
Page one done. This page is dialogue free so I didn't have to worry about that when I was drawing it. I think that there might be a bit of narration on the first panel but there is plenty of space for that.

Gestures and David Finch tutorial. I've finished with the Wreck-it Ralph gestures and moved onto The Hobbit.
Page 1 pencils, sort of. I'm drawing this whole thing digitally so the only time I'm using a pencil is in the thumb nailing stage, but this is a tightened up version of the thumbnail done in blue. The lighter blue is more or less a redrawing the thumbnail the darker blue is what would normally be the pencils. Tomorrow the finished page.

 Gestures and David Finch tutorial.
Sketchbook page. Thumbnails and some coffee break sketches.

Gestures and the last of the Sunstone copies. They took a lot longer than I meant for them to take but I'm glad I did them. The expressions and gestures are so good and I feel like I've learned a bunch by doing them. Next I'll be doing some tutorials by David Finch who put out a few tutorial DVD's a while back. I've gone through the DVDs about six times already but I think that I can still squeeze some knowledge out of them.
Page 3 and the cyborg from page 1. He going to be important, I think, if I can talk my writer into making him a recurring threat.

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

 Gestures and Sunstone copies.
Page 2 and some random sketches. a larger shot of the second panel on top, Rygel and a Prowler from Farscape and Elsa from Frozen.

Tuesday, January 7, 2014

So one of the unintended bonuses from doing gestures from a cartoon was that I've learned a thing of two about character silhouettes. Just by the shape you can tell who is who, without any kind of details. Also Sunstone copies, just two more to go.
Bruce Willis and a guy I saw on the bus with cool hair. Also thumbnails for page 1 of my comic. I do two layouts just to kind of play around with pacing and angles, then I chop them up in Photoshop and do some cleaner "pencil" lines and then ink it.

 Gestures and Sunstone copies.
Wonder Woman. Looking forward to seeing her in the Batman/Superman movie. I hope it leads to her getting her own movie series. Basing off the run by Brian Azzarello would be awesome and would make it really accessible to people who aren't very familiar with Wonder Woman.

Sunday, January 5, 2014

 Gestures and Sunstone copies.
The ships cook and a design for the ship. The only thing that I'll change is the crane on the back, it's to big for the ship.

Saturday, January 4, 2014

 Gestures and Sunstone copies.
The medic I made her much more slender and gave her longer legs to set her apart from the other characters. I also gave her longer hair done into dreadlocks to further set her apart.
