Gestures and Vilppu Copies. Doing overlapping and the figure in perspective.
I like the way that this one came out for the most part. Speed is going to be my goal for a while.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Some shading stuff mostly.
I like how some of the colors turned out but the blending is weak. I think that blending is the next big thing I need to work on.

Also today is my birthday hopefully this time next year I'll have improved as much if not more than I have in the last year.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. These copies are starting to take longer than I would like just because they're more detailed than some of the earlier stuff but almost done with them now. A week maybe two and I'll have copied and read most everything in the book.
Another very muscly arm, a little less defined than the one yesterday but still pretty ripped. Female body builders don't seem to go for the grotesque bronze hulk look as much as there male counterparts. This came out pretty good because I didn't have to define every single muscle, there was a bit more smoothness to her skin and that made it easier to paint.

Gestures and Vilppu. Looking at shapes and silhouettes. Also a longer pose at the bottom.
OH GOD SO MANY MUSCLES. This was really tough because of the definition of but came out good even if parts like the chest are rough.

Second post today. Gestures and Vilppu hands.
Okay cobwebs shaken off and this came out way better than the one I posted earlier. Still having some issues around the edges but not bad overall.
Forgot to post when I got home so doing two posts today. First up my normal gestures and Vilppu copies. Feet and legs mostly.
I'm going to go back to doing quick painting studies for a while and the first thing I'm going to focus on is arms. I wanted to work on my line work with this one and I think that it's getting better but doesn't work with this painting style. I was also feeling a little rusty since I've been doing so much line work lately.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Legs and some knees.
The final perspective drawing for a bit. My brain feels a bit fried after that, but on the plus side I feel I made some progress. Next time I do this I'll make a little more and so on and so forth. Kinda what this whole blog is about.

Gestures and Vilppu leg copies.
So this one was tricky because it wasn't tricky. I was starting to feel confident in my perspective abilities and thought that a simple building wouldn't pose any kind of challenge so I rushed along, not taking as much care to get the proportions right until I noticed that the picture was starting to look funny. About half the time spent on this drawing was on fixing it , so lesson learned, no matter how much I think I know something I should always be checking and evaluating my self.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Hips and abs this time.
Since this was such a simple scene I decided to add some tone to this image. It came out okay even if I am still struggling with perspective.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Getting into the waist, hips and butt on some of these.
MORE PERSPECTIVE! Getting a little easier, not easy by any stretch of the imagination but I'm starting to remember all the things I've learned about perspective and more of those rules and guidelines make sense now that I'm doing this.
Gestures and Vilppu copies. Doing a lot of stuff with the rib cage this time.
Another perspective study and this time I went a more simple scene and decided to just do without any kind of rendering to focus on the perspective. I think that this came out pretty good. Perspective is tough for me but I think that this picture came out alright.

Got home from work kind of late yesterday and planed to only lie down for ten minutes before getting up and posting. And nine hours later my alarm clock was going off, so two posts today.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Going through some exercises drawing along the surface of an object and some more anatomy stuff.
Some very basic perspective and I think that I bit off a bit to much for my first exercise, I tried to to an entire city-scape in one hour. I'll do some smaller scenes until this stuff becomes more natural.

ALSO yesterday was my 400th post but given the fact that my birthday is next week and the fact that I'll have posted everyday for a year in two weeks I think I'll do something then to do kind of a review of how my skill have improved over the year.

Gestures and Vilppu copies, legs and arms today.
my finished portrait of Summer Glau. I'm pretty happy with it. I had a lot of issues with the hair and the hand but they came out pretty good in the end.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Knees and legs with some feet at the end.
this is about six hours into a portrait of Summer Glau. I'm trying to do longer studies and so far I like the way this one is coming out so far.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Getting into some of the more technical stuff mostly around the back and shoulders.
A Harpy speed painting. I don't like the way the foreground blends with the background. I think that I could have pushed the contrast WAY more and the clouds could have looked more fluffy. The anatomy on the harpy is okay but could use some improvement. On the other hand the wings look nice. Last Speed painting for a few weeks while I tackle my perspective problem.

Gestures and some more Vilppu anatomy stuff. Getting into some more of the nitty gritty of anatomy.
One last skull this time with only one light source. It made some cool shadows on the skull.

Gestures and Vilppu copies. Getting into some more detailed stuff here.
Alas poor Yorick. I knew him Horatio. There's the only line I know from Hamlet. This is the same skull from the yesterday from a different angle. I like this one but I think that I'm going to only do one more and them move on to one of my biggest weaknesses, PERSPECTIVE! Dun-dun-duuuuuuuun!

Friday, September 13, 2013

Gestures and a few Vilppu copies. I was moving kind of slow that day so its not as much as normal.
More basic lighting stuff now with SKULLS! I have a plastic replica skull that I used for this so the texture on this is shinier than it would be on real bone but other than that I like how this came out especially for a one hour study.

 Gestures and more Vilppu copies.
A crocodile dragon that took about 3-4 hours to do. I like it for the most part. It's not great but I think that there's some good stuff happening here.

Gestures and some more people.
Another light and rendering study. This came out pretty good and you can see my reflection in the mug.

Gestures and some more refined tube people.
An apple. Trying to get the texture right and get the lighting right. Also just in case anyone cares I was eating this apple while I painted this. I'm not sure why but I found that really funny when I was painting this.

 Gestures and more tube people.
A ball I made out of my kneaded eraser. I'm trying to do some more basic studies to go with some of my speed paintings and longer studies.

Gestures and some more tube people and children.
A quick painting of a train. I'm not very good at painting mechanical things so this was a nice exercise and I think that it came out pretty good. I tried to combine a bullet train and a steam engine to give it a unique feel and I think that I got what I was looking for.
 Gestures and cylinder people.

Forgot to post because I was at work then came home got to painting and lost track of time. so two posts today. I'm posting these two paintings together because they showed me what I REALLY NEED to work on. PERSPECTIVE. Both of these where such a struggle and look like crap because of how much trouble the perspective caused me. So I will be taking care of that in the very near future.

Gestures and getting into some more in depth poses/
A character inspired by Detective Chimp from the Shadowpact comics. I like the way he came out even if some of the details are kind of loose.
